Mindfulness as a Skillful Approach to Inclusive Design
Inclusive Design seeks to reduce barriers to fuller participation in society faced by individuals and communities whose needs, perspectives, strengths, vulnerabilities, and backgrounds may differ greatly from those of the designer(s). The potential risks and consequences of unintended exclusion, misinterpretation, oversight and so on, can be high. Many of the conceptual, philosophical, environmental and cultural biases we might have as designers (and which can influence our design choices), may exist in the form of “implicit” attitudes and may not be aligned with our conscious beliefs. Research findings by Ellen Langer (e.g.: E. Langer et al. 2008), show that certain Mindfulness strategies can reduce the impact of such hidden biases and conceptual constructs. A method for detecting implicit attitudes, using the Implicit Association Test, is explored, with an aim to propose Mindfulness strategies both as a countermeasure for implicit attitudes as well as an overall support for Inclusive Design
A Network Package for the Macintosh Using the DoD Internet Protocols
This memo describes the design, implementation and use of the MacIP libraries and programs for running DoD Internet Protocols on the Macintosh over Apple Talk. It is preliminary documentation and out of date, but it is all that exists
Uses of Generics in Ada
This paper discusses how Ada generic procedures and packages can be used in novel ways to provide general initialization of records, expressions using discriminants, record field hiding and explicit control of parameter binding
Indirect Incorporation Of Human Rights Treaty Provisions In Criminal Cases In United States Courts
The Treaties
The recent ratification by the United States of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)\u27 and the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (Torture Convention)2 raise important possibilities for the rights of criminal defendants in United States court
United States International Drug Control Policy, Extradition, and the Rule of Law in Colombia
The United States has been fighting the importation, distribution,
and possession of illicit drugs for a long time
The invasive Northern Pacific seastar, Asterias amurensis, transcriptome
Here we provide the supplementary data collection for the upcoming publication of the larval transcriptomic resource for the Northern Pacific Seastar, Asterias amurensis, an invasive marine predator in Australia. A. amurensis is ranked among the most potentially damaging invasive species in Australia and has recently expanded its range along the eastern mainland coast of Australia. As a first step to study the genetic basis of adaptive change and other important evolutionary processes during a contemporary invasive range expansion we de novo assembled and characterised the transcriptome
Using Low-Cost Workstations to Investigate Computer Networks and Distributed Systems
A quality education in contemporary computer science requires that students gain experience with realistic systems. Many efforts at bringing empirical computer science to undergraduates focus on rather old technologies, for example, building a compiler or simulating a disk scheduler. Although efforts are being made to use some newer technologies, the efforts are concentrating on teaching traditional material in a new medium. However, the medium itself -- networked workstations in a server environment -- is worthy of exploration by undergraduate students in a laboratory setting. At Dartmouth, we developed a Computer Network Laboratory to let students experiment with computer networks, protocols and distributed systems. Through this article, we wish to share our experiences in the design of the laboratory and give an example of how the laboratory was used in a computer network course
Transitioning to Glass Cockpit Primary Training Fleets: Implications
In late July, 2004, Ohio University had the unique opportunity to become a front-runner in one of the most significant revolutions in Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA) training by purchasing seven new Piper Warrior III aircraft equipped with Avidyne Entegra Integrated Flight Decks, a highly advanced avionics system. This technology combines computerized flight decks with multi-function displays, moving maps, and integrated flight instruments in basic trainers. Prior to integration of the new aircraft, initial questions arose addressing concerns about student pilot flight training conducted in Technically Advanced Aircraft, instructors whom have little experience teaching Technically Advanced Aircraft, integrating new aircraft platforms into FAR 141 Training Course Outline (TCO) requirements, and use of these aircraft while fulfilling Practical Test Standards (PTS) requirements
